Entonces se aproximó a Jesús y le dijo: -¡Señor! ¿No te importa que yo esté sirviendo sola? ¡Ordena a mi hermana que venga a ayudarme! Respondióle el Señor: -¡Marta, Marta! Andas inquieta y te preocupas con muchas cosas. María, en cambio, escogió la mejor parte, y ésta no le será arrebatada.

For J. Alchemist who knows and uses the secrets of the Great Work

 

As they went on their way, they entered a certain village. And a woman named Martha welcomed them into her home. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and remained there listening to His teachings. Martha was bustling about, occupied with many tasks. Then she approached Jesus and said, "Lord! Do You not care that I am serving alone? Tell my sister to come and help me!" The Lord replied to her, "Martha, Martha! You are anxious and troubled about many things. Mary, on the other hand, has chosen the better part, and it will not be taken away from her.


PREFACIO

Es importante advertir que El Alquimista es un libro simbólico, a diferencia de El Peregrino de Compostela (Diario de un mago), que fue un trabajo descriptivo. Durante once años de mi vida estudié Alquimia. La simple idea de transformar metales en oro o de descubrir el Elixir de la Larga Vida ya era suficientemente fascinante como para atraer a cualquiera que se iniciara en Magia. Confieso que el Elixir de la Larga Vida me seducía más, pues antes de entender y sentir la presencia de Dios, el pensamiento de que todo se acabaría un día me desesperaba. De manera que, al enterarme de la posibilidad de conseguir un líquido capaz de prolongar muchos años mi existencia, resolví dedicarme en cuerpo y alma a su fabricación.


PREFACE


I'D LIKE TO SAY SOMETHING TO EXPLAIN WHY The Alchemist is a symbolic book, whereas The Pilgrimage was a work on non-fiction.

For eleven years of my life I stuied alchemy. The very idea of transforming metals into gold, or discovering the Elixir of Life, was too fascinating to pass unnoticed by someone coming face-to-face with magic for the first time.

I confess that the Elixir of Life was what attracted me most. Before I heard and felt the presence of God, the idea of everything one day coming to an end used to drive me to despair. So when I learned the possibility of finding a liquid that could prolong my life by many years, I decided to dedicate myself, body and soul, to making it.


Era una época de grandes cambios sociales (el comienzo de los años setenta) y en Brasil no se encontraban aún publicaciones serias sobre Alquimia. Al igual que uno de los personajes del libro, comencé a gastar el poco dinero que tenía en la compra de libros importados y dedicaba muchas horas diarias al estudio de su complicada simbología. 


Those were times - in the early 70s - of great social upheaval, and no serious works on alchemy had been published in Brazil. Like the two characters in the book, I started to spend what little money I had on buying imported books, and devoted many hours every day to studying their complicated symbolism.


Intenté ponerme en contacto con dos o tres personas en Río de Janeiro que se dedicaban seriamente a la Gran Obra, y rehusaron recibirme. Conocí también a muchas otras que se decían alquimistas, poseían sus laboratorios y prometían enseñarme los secretos del Arte a cambio de verdaderas fortunas; hoy me doy cuenta de que en realidad no sabían nada de lo que pretendían enseñarme. 


I tried to get in touch with two or three people in Rio de Janeiro who were seriously dedicated to the Great Work, but they refused to meet me. I also met many others who claimed to be alchemists, had their own laboratories, and promised to teach me the secrets of the Art in exchange for small fortunes; today I realize that they actually knew nothing about what they claimed to teach me


A pesar de toda mi dedicación, los resultados eran absolutamente nulos.  No sucedía nada de lo que los manuales de Alquimia afirmaban en su complicado lenguaje. Era un sinfín de símbolos, dragones, leones, soles, lunas y mercurios, y yo siempre tenía la impresión de hallarme en el camino equivocado, porque el lenguaje simbólico permite un gigantesco margen de error. En 1973, ya desesperado por la falta de progresos, cometí una suprema irresponsabilidad. En aquella época yo estaba contratado por la Secretaría de Educación del Mato Grosso para dar clases de teatro en dicho estado, y decidí utilizar a mis alumnos en laboratorios teatrales cuyo tema era la Tabla de la Esmeralda. Esta actitud, unida a algunas incursiones mías en las áreas pantanosas de la Magia, hizo que al año siguiente yo pudiera sentir en mi propia carne la verdad del proverbio: «El que la hace la paga.» Todo a mi alrededor se derrumbó por completo. 


All my efforts were in vain. Nothing happened, none of those events were reported in the published texts on alchemy. Books written in such impenetrable language, full of symbols, dragons, lions, suns, moons, and quicksilver. The symbolism allowed such a wide range of uncertainty that I always felt I was following the wrong path. In 1973, desperate at my failure to make any progress, I committed a supremely irresponsible act. At the time I was working for the state, giving lectures on drama, and I decided to set my students exercises relating to the Emeralrd Tablet. This action, and other incursions into the murkier areas of magic in the following year, led me to experience, in flesh and blood, the truth of the proverb, "As you sow, so shall you reap". My whole life was in ruins.


Pasé los siguientes seis años de mi vida en una actitud bastante escéptica en relación a todo lo que tuviese que ver con el área mística. En este exilio espiritual aprendí muchas cosas importantes: que sólo aceptamos una verdad cuando previamente la negamos desde el fondo del alma; que no debemos huir de nuestro propio destino, y que la mano de Dios es infinitamente generosa, a pesar de Su rigor. 


For the next six years I was quite sceptical about anything to do with mysticism. During this time in spiritual exile, I learned many important things: that we only accept a truth after we have first wholeheartedly rejected it; that we musn't run away from our own destiny; and that the hand of God is firm, but infinitely generous.


En 1981 conocía RAM, mi Maestro, que me reconduciría al camino que estaba trazado para mí. Y mientras él me entrenaba en sus enseñanzas, volví a estudiar Alquimia por cuenta propia. Cierta noche, mientras conversábamos después de una extenuante sesión de telepatía, pregunté por qué el lenguaje de los alquimistas era tan vago y complicado.

In 1981 I met RAM and my Teacher, who led me back to the road I am destined to travel. And as he introduced me to his beliefs, I went back to studying alchemy on my own. We were talking one night, after a long telephatic sessions, and I asked him why alchemists always use such vague, complicated language.

Existen tres tipos de alquimistas -dijo mi Maestro-. Aquellos que son imprecisos porque no saben de lo que están hablando; aquellos que lo son porque saben de lo 6 que están hablando, pero también saben que el lenguaje de la Alquimia es un lenguaje dirigido al corazón y no a la razón. 

My Teacher said, "There are three types of alchemist: those who are vague because they don't know what they're doing; those who are vague because they do know what they're doing, but who also know that the language of alchemy is addressed to the heart, and not to the mind."

-¿Y cuál es el tercer tipo? pregunté. -Aquellos que jamás oyeron hablar de Alquimia pero que consiguieron, a través de sus vidas, descubrir la Piedra Filosofal. Y de este modo, mi Maestro (que pertenecía al segundo tipo) decidió darme clases de Alquimia. 

"And the third type?"

"Those who will never hear about alchemy, but who will succeed, through the lives they lead, in discovering the Philosopher's Stone." And with this, my Teacher - who belonged to the second category - agreed to give me lessons in alchemy. I discovered that the symbolic language, which so annoyed and confused me, was the only way to reach the Soul of the World, or what Jung called "the collective unconsciousness".

Descubrí entonces que el lenguaje simbólico que tanto me irritaba y desorientaba era la única manera de alcanzar el Alma del Mundo, o lo que Jung llamó el «inconsciente colectivo». Descubrí la Leyenda Personal y las Señales de Dios, verdades que mi raciocinio intelectual se negaba a aceptar a causa de su simplicidad. Descubrí que alcanzar la Gran Obra no es tarea de unos pocos, sino de todos los seres humanos de la faz de la Tierra. Es evidente que la Gran Obra no siempre viene bajo la forma de un huevo o de un frasco con líquido, pero todos nosotros podemos -sin lugar a dudas- sumergirnos en el Alma del Mundo. 

I discovered the Personal "Legend", and the Signs of God, truths which my rational mind had refused to accept because of their simplicity. I discovered that carrying out Master Work is not the work of a few, but of every human being on the face of the Earth. And that while, of course, the Master Work will not always reveal itself to us in the form of an egg, or in a jar of liquid, everyone, beyond any shadow of doubt, can enter into the Soul of the World.

Por eso El Alquimista es también un texto simbólico. En el decurso de sus páginas, además de transmitir todo lo que aprendí al respecto, procuro rendir homenaje a grandes escritores que consiguieron alcanzar el Lenguaje Universal: Hemingway, Blake, Borges (que también utilizó la historia persa para uno de sus cuentos) y Malba Tahan, entre otros. 

This is why The Alchemist, too, is a symbolic text. In the course of the book I pass on everything I have learned. I've also tried to pay homage to great writers who managed to achieve the Universal Language. Hemingway, Blake, Borges (who also used Persian history in one of his short stories), Malba, Tahan, among others.

Para completar este extenso prefacio e ilustrar lo que mi Maestro quería decir con lo del tercer tipo de alquimistas, vale la pena recordar una historia que él mismo me contó en su laboratorio. 

To conculed this long preface, and illustrate what my Teacher wanted to say regarding the third type of alchemist, it is worth recalling a story he told me himself, in his laboratory.

Nuestra Señora, con el Niño Jesús en sus brazos, decidió bajar a la Tierra y visitar un monasterio. Orgullosos, todos los sacerdotes formaron una larga fila, y uno a uno 7 se acercaban a la Virgen para rendirle homenaje. Uno declamó bellos poemas, otro mostró las iluminaciones que había realizado para la Biblia, un tercero recitó los nombres de todos los santos. Y así sucesivamente, monje tras monje, fueron venerando a Nuestra Señora y al Niño Jesús. 

Our Lady, with the Baby Jesus in her arms, decided to come down to Earth and visit a monastery. The monks proudly joined in a long queue, and each of them came before the Virgin to render their homage. One declaimed beautiful poetry, another showed his illuminated paintings of biblical subject, a third repeated the names of all the Saints. And so on, one monk after the other, praising Our Lady and the Baby Jesus.

En el último lugar de la fila había un monje, el más humilde del convento, que nunca había aprendido los sabios textos de la época. Sus padres eran personas humildes, que trabajaban en un viejo circo de los alrededores, y todo lo que le habían enseñado era lanzar bolas al aire haciendo algunos malabarismos.

The last monk of all there was the humblest in the whole monastery, who had never studied the learned books of the time. His parents were simple people, who worked in an old travelling circus, and all they had taught him was to throw balls into the air and juggle with them.

 Cuando llegó su turno, los otros monjes quisieron poner fin a los homenajes, pues el antiguo malabarista no tendría nada importante que decir o hacer y podía desacreditar la imagen del convento. Pero en el fondo de su corazón, él también sentía una inmensa necesidad de dar algo de sí a Jesús y la Virgen. Avergonzado, sintiendo sobre sí la mirada reprobatoria de sus hermanos, sacó algunas naranjas de su bolsa y comenzó a tirarlas al aire haciendo malabarismos, que era lo único que sabía hacer. 

When it was his turn, the other members of the order wanted to bring the homage to a conclusion, since the old juggler would have nothing important to say, and might lower the image of the monastery. But in the bottom of his heart, he also felt a burning need to give something of himself to Jesus and the Virgin. Ashamed, conscious of the disapproving looks of his brothers, he took a few oranges from his bag, and started to juggle them in the air, saying that juggling was all he knew how to do.

Fue en ese instante cuando el Niño Jesús sonrió y comenzó a aplaudir en el regazo de Nuestra Señora. Y fue hacia él a quien la Virgen extendió los brazos para dejarle que sostuviera un poco al Niño.

It was at that moment that the Baby Jesus, sitting on Our Lady's lap, smiled and started to clap his hands. And the Virgin reached out her arms, inviting him to hold the baby.
